ULGATL empowers metro Atlantans with access to civic and community leaders, and forums for productive dialogue regarding topics and priorities in their communities.
In June 2020, following the shooting death of Georgian Rashard Brooks and other unarmed Black people throughout the nation at the hands of police, the Urban League of Greater Atlanta launched ‘A New Day Police Reform and Accountability Commission.’ Our goal is to collaborate with policy makers, law enforcement agencies, community and civil rights organizations, and everyday people to identify solutions to make our communities safer and our relationships stronger. We have an ongoing commitment to work together with public officials to reinforce community policing and empower civilians to hold police accountable.
The Urban League of Greater Atlanta Policy Council ensures elected officials’ public policy decisions are consistent with and advance the National Urban League’s values and overarching vision. Additionally, the ULGAPC is charged with working with Georgia’s elected officials to enact policies that advance racial equity, equal justice under the law, affordable healthcare and housing, health care, voting rights, economic development, environmental justice, and educational and job opportunities for all citizens. Our Council was formed to actively address inequities that have long existed but were brought into stark Relief with the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is chaired by Nancy Flake-Johnson, President & CEO of ULGA, and comprised of the following founding members: Georgia Budget Policy Institute, Georgia Black Legislative Caucus, American Civil Liberties Union, Anti-Defamation League People’s Agenda, AARP and Atlanta Business League.
Teams on ULGAPC work to implement policies related to various priorities:
