ULGA ‘s Housing – Wealth Building & Financial Empowerment Division focuses on opportunities for homeownership education, preservation, and asset building, in partnership with individuals and families seeking long term financial empowerment.
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Certified Housing Counselor provide comprehensive individual and group housing counseling and education to renters, prospective first-time homebuyers, existing homeowners, counselor will create and maintain electronic customer files and hard copy files with updated information in compliance with the ULGA Housing – Wealth Building Division and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) filing guidelines.
The primary responsibility of a HUD Certified Housing Counselor is providing housing counseling and education to renters, prospective first-time homebuyers, existing homeowners, and homeowners in distress. Housing Counselors work to prevent foreclosure of a current home by assisting clients in overcoming obstacles with current financial situations, credit scores, and financial budgeting. Develop corrective action plans, working with and analyzing clients” overall financial status to identify the best solution for each client. In addition to working with distress clients to prevent foreclosure, counselors work with the lending institutions regarding loan products for purchasing a home or refinance a current mortgage. Counselors and Financial Coaches work with clients to facilitate the process toward attainment of established goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for day-to-day client scheduling and delivery of home ownership counseling and education in credit counseling, financial capacity building, pre-purchase, delinquency, and foreclosure prevention counseling.
- Provide comprehensive individual and or group credit, foreclosure prevention, rental, and home ownership counseling sessions.
- Participate and facilitate group education workshops in accordance with U.S. HUD standards. (Evenings and Saturdays).
- Conduct financial analysis and affordability assessment based on information and documents provided by the client.
- Create an Action Plan that supports and builds client’s financial capacity.
- Perform on-going case management to provide service and problem-solving assistance.
- Create, record, and maintain all communications and document meetings or interactions with client, lenders, and community partners both hard copy and electronic files utilizing require client management system – CounselorMax. Or applicable CRM System
- Complete appropriate statistical and analytical management reports to include information regarding counseling services, customer satisfaction, and outcomes data.
- Conduct follow-up via phone and/or email to determine whether the client is following their financial goal plan.
- Collect Closing Disclosure statements once a client fulfills home ownership.
- Coordinate with all necessary community resources (realtors, lenders, appraisers, title company representatives, program administrators, county, and city representatives, etc.) to ensure that documentation is accurate, complete, timely, and satisfies all requirements and parameters of programs/services offered.
- Interact and collaborate with others in pursuit of and attainment of the program goals established by the Program Director. Represent Agency at events, seminars, and networking functions.
- Adhere to and demonstrate Urban League’s guiding principles of integrity, respect, accountability, compassion, and leadership. Other duties as assigned by leadership.
- Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the leadership
Required Education and Experience
- Must hold a HUD Certified Housing Counselor certification
- BA Degree from accredited college and/or five (5) years’ experiences in any aspect of the homeownership process: mortgage lending, realtor service, closing of mortgage loan, loan processing, and loan modification. Case management experience preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new software and computer systems.
- Understanding of the structure of primary and secondary mortgage markets, the collection and loss mitigation functions of those entities collecting mortgage payments, financial management and budgeting.
- Knowledge of mortgage/home-buying processes, including debt ratios, title company requirements, etc. Two to four years of experience as a loan processor in the banking industry or other relevant experience (working with mortgages, home purchases, income-to-debt ratios, title companies, etc.).
- Ability to work effectively in both individual and group settings.
- Highly motivated self-starter with strong project management, facilitation, and organizational skills.
- Ability to demonstrate and maintain a flexible, adaptive, and positive approach in a fast-paced and constantly changing office environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (such as Outlook, Word, and Excel) and other office relevant software programs.
- Minimum two years of experience with database/spreadsheet entry/maintenance/management.
- Public speaking and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a high-volume work environment.
- Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
- High level of detail-orientation to ensure compliance with regulations, parameters, policies, and procedures.
- Bilingual in English & Spanish is a plus.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver’s License is required.
- Availability to work some evenings, Saturdays, and maintain a flexible work schedule.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $45,000.00 – $50,000.00 per year
