Farewell to a brave, powerful woman: Winnie Mandikizela-Mandela

The Urban League of Greater Atlanta extends condolences to the family of the legendary Winnie Madikizela-Mandela who died today at age 81. Known as a fierce anti-apartheid activist before, during and after her husband’s imprisonment, the ex-wife of Nelson Mandela became a worldwide symbol of courage and determination in the fight against oppression. Internationally known figures such as former archbishop and Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu have paid tribute to her. Archbishop Tutu is quoted as follows:

“She refused to be bowed by the imprisonment of her husband, the perpetual harassment of her family by security forces, detentions, bannings and banishment. Her courageous defiance was deeply inspirational to me, and to generations of activists.”

We salute Winnie Madikizela-Mandela for her role in helping to break the yoke of apartheid rule and for working to uplift downtrodden populations in her native South Africa and beyond.
